About 6.8 million adults suffer from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Different medications and relaxation techniques can help GAD sufferers to reduce their persistent and excessive worries. But, according to a piece of research published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, GAD patients can achieve full recovery. The researchers also indicated that social support may lead to a positive impact on mental health. However, other factors can also help relieve anxiety symptoms.
Social Support: an Essential Factor
The study concluded that marriage and social support can stimulate recovery. While divorced people face an increased risk of incident anxiety disorders, marriage decreases the risk of those disorders. Unlike the individuals who are divorced, separated, widowed or never married, married people have a higher chance of good mental health, the study indicated. Having a confidant with whom you can share both joys and struggles often leads to a sense of belonging, self-worth and security, the study stated. In fact, relationships are associated with positive social and emotional health, as they encourage individuals to make useful contributions to society and feel less lonely. However, social support isn’t the only factor responsible for recovery.
Other Significant Factors
The study examined a list of factors that could influence the healing process. These factors include, marriage and social support, demographics, socioeconomic status, health behaviors, physical and mental health conditions, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and exercise as well as spirituality. According to the study results, religious or spiritual beliefs may increase people’s chances of complete mental health by 36%. Nonetheless, those who suffer from chronic pain, insomnia, depression and other mental illnesses or chronic health conditions, are less likely to enjoy excellent metal health. It’s important to treat serious health conditions, in order to avoid developing mental health issues or aggravating pre-existing anxiety symptoms.
Excellent Mental Health Criteria
To meet the first criterion for complete or excellent mental health, an individual must feel daily life satisfaction or happiness almost on a daily basis over the past month. As for the second criterion, a person should experience increased levels of well-being, both on a social and psychological level, in the past month. The third criterion specifies that people must not have experienced generalized anxiety disorder, depressive disorders, substance dependence or suicidal thoughts, during the last year. The lead author, Esme Fuller-Thomson, affirmed that the study findings could give people with anxiety symptoms more hope of recovery. They could also be good news for their families and treating doctors.
